I like design, becuase it’s shiny.
Yes good design is functional and serves a purpose and does all sorts of useful and wonderful things, but if at the end of the day it makes me go mmm shiny that’s the sue mark of approval on design. This probaly illustrates how little i know about design except to say i know what i like. I also do know that so much goes into good design it would make your head explode a tiny bit.
So if you feel like some head exploding I suspect checking out the Design Institute of NZ’s Designers speak series (this month in 4 cities) could be a good plan, especially when people use such great words as immersionariation in their talk description. I don’t know what it means but that word is mmm shiny

Also shiny is the image DINZ uses for the Design Speak series and it’s fun and packed full of lots of things that I think make it good design. These are the things that speak to me.
It’s totally topical. After Owls and Russian Dolls and possibly terrariums (ok terrariums are a pet fave of mine but i kind of hope if i talk about them enough they will break the glass ceiling of craft) Birds with Cages are a hot item in the craft world right now, especially in the jewellery part of the craft world. I’ve been spending the last 4 months trying to prototyping my own version of a bird and a cage so i know.
This is a NZ bird, The Tui – ahh iconic
but the bird is breaking out of the cage – oooo freedom
there is a shadow. One of the big design trends on the web (which i didn’t even know about until webstock when the amazing amazing, wonderful wonderful Scott Thomas pointed it out) is reflections which made me realise i do see reflections everywhere in websites at the moment, but i didn’t even think about it they were just there. And reflections have entered my subconscious so much that when trying to work on new photos for my designs i was determined to have some groovy reflected shot. Which either makes me think i spend too much time online or i visit really well designed sites that are trendy
Either way the image is all ooo web2010 awesomeness
but the shadow is not the tui, but i don;t knwo what it is – ooo the mystery of the unknown
So I’m expecting some hot, topical, iconical, breaking down the barriers words that’s will be fresh and new.
Now i got that from just one image, which if you ask me makes that image good design. Also why i would be attending tomorrow night if i didn’t have tickets to go see the Walworth Farce which am so extremely excited about that it will justify a separate post as to why.
